All-terrain Handling Solution: Tracked Forklifts Solve Material Transport Challenges on Muddy and Rough Sites

Conventional wheeled forklifts are only suitable for hardened flat ground. They tend to slip and get stuck in muddy farmlands, mountain construction sites, gravel yards and soft ground after rainfall. Integrating forklift lifting mechanisms with tracked undercarriages, tracked forklifts become key equipment for loading and handling materials on unpaved complex terrain. They are widely used in infrastructure construction, agriculture and orchards, forest logging, precast component transportation and other field scenarios.

    1. Introduction to Tracked Forklifts

Also known as crawler off-road forklifts, tracked forklifts combine the cargo lifting function of forklifts and the outstanding cross-country capacity of tracked chassis. The tracks enlarge ground contact area and reduce ground pressure, enabling pallet goods, steel materials, precast parts, agricultural supplies and timber to be stacked and transported on mud, swamp, gravel slopes and snow-covered ground where wheeled vehicles cannot operate. Compared with ordinary wheeled forklifts, tracked forklifts feature stronger traction and less risk of sinking. The high ground clearance design helps cross pits and obstacles easily, solving the pain points of loading and unloading on unpaved field sites.

    2. Classification of Tracked Forklifts

    By track material

    · Rubber tracked forklifts: Low noise and minimal damage to ground surfaces. Mainly small and medium models for farmlands, orchards, lawns and slightly muddy construction sites.

    · Steel tracked forklifts: Wear-resistant and impact-resistant, suitable for mines and heavy-duty work sites with sharp gravel, with larger load capacity.

    By power type

    · Diesel tracked forklifts: Strong power and long continuous working time. The mainstream option for field construction and heavy-load operations.

    · Electric tracked forklifts: Zero emission and low noise, applicable in greenhouses, indoor and environmentally controlled sites, mostly for light-duty work.

    By rated load capacity

    · Light-duty: 1–3 tons, compact body for orchards and narrow mountain trails.

    · Medium-duty: 3–6 tons, widely used in infrastructure and precast yards as mainstream models.

    · Heavy-duty: Over 6 tons, for mines and transportation of large engineering precast components.

    3. How to Select a Tracked Chassis with Proper Load Capacity

When selecting the load capacity of a tracked chassis, do not only consider cargo weight. Integrate total machine weight, load gravity center, lifting height and terrain working conditions while reserving sufficient safety margin.

    1. Confirm the maximum single cargo weight, measure cargo dimensions and identify the load center distance (distance from cargo gravity center to fork surface). The further outward the load gravity center, the lower the actual allowable load of the machine.

    2. Calculate the total machine weight including chassis dead weight, mast, forks, counterweight and operator. The total weight determines track ground pressure. For soft muddy ground, choose wider tracks to reduce ground pressure and prevent sinking.

    3. Take lifting height into consideration: Higher lifting reduces machine stability. The actual safe load shall be decreased for high masts under the same tonnage rating.

    4. Working condition derating: Rated load shall be reduced by 20%~30% when operating on slopes and uneven ground. When attachments such as side shifters or clamps are fitted, the self-weight of attachments occupies load capacity, so working load must also be lowered.

    5. Reserve safety factor: The rated chassis load should exceed regular maximum load with over 20% safety margin. Meanwhile verify track shoe width, roller and tension mechanism strength to adapt to shock and vibration conditions.

Simple rule: Select according to nominal load on flat ground; derate load when working on muddy slopes or at high lifting heights.

    4. How Tracked Forklifts Improve Operation Safety on Uneven Ground

Tracked chassis naturally have larger contact area and better traction than tires, yet rollover risks still exist on rough terrain. Safety is guaranteed by both equipment design and operation rules.

    Equipment design

    · Widen and lengthen tracks to expand supporting base and lower overall gravity center. Optimize counterweight design to improve anti-overturn performance.

    · Floating track structure allows tracks to fit terrain adaptively while travelling, keeping rollers continuously touching the ground.

    · Equipped with load-sensitive hydraulic system, brake protection and overload protection. It limits movements during heavy-load lifting to prevent hydraulic failure. Slope auxiliary braking avoids sliding downhill.

    Operation specifications

    · Keep forks low and tilted backward during travelling to lower gravity. Never drive with loads lifted high.

    · Pass bumpy sections at low speed. Avoid rapid acceleration, sudden braking and sharp turning.

    · Slope operation rule: Forks face uphill when climbing; forks face downhill when descending. Never travel crosswise on slopes.

    · Bind irregular cargo tightly to prevent gravity shift caused by bumping. Further reduce working load for heavy cargo on undulating ground.

    · Inspect track tension, rollers, hydraulic pipelines and braking system before work. Do not operate the machine with faults.
